Comforting Amish Oatmeal Pie that tastes remarkably like pecan pie. Brown sugar gives a deep, rich flavor to this sweet, simple pie that is a favorite Amish country recipe.

My favorite Amish Cooking cookbook is loaded with varieties of pies I had never even heard of. Pineapple pie, pudding pies, custard pies, molasses pie…just about any pie there is. It’s been fun to work through making them.

This Oatmeal Pie quickly became my kids favorite. It’s the ultimate in comfort food and the filling takes just 5 minutes to mix up. It tastes like a sweet version of baked oatmeal!

This sweet pie bakes up soft and gooey. Every bite brought a different food to mind. A bowl of oatmeal with brown sugar. A cinnamon rollChewy oatmeal CookiesBaked oatmeal. Oats are one of those versatile ingredients that are in so many comfort foods of ours. And this pie is one of my new favorites.

Ingredients in Oatmeal Pie

During the Civil War, pecans were in short supply in the South, making them very expensive. People would substitute oats for the pecans, resulting in this delicious oatmeal pie that tastes similar to a pecan pie.

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Eggs. Large eggs at room temperature. Room temperature eggs mix in best.
  • Brown sugar and white sugar. For the perfect balance of sweetness.
  • Salted butter. If you only have unsalted butter, add a pinch of salt to the filling.
  • Oats. Old fashioned rolled oats. I don’t recommend quick oats with this recipe.
  • Half and half. Use a high fat milk for the best texture. Half and half or whole milk are the best options.
  • Vanilla. May I recommend a bourbon vanilla extract? 😋
  • Pie dough. I recommend our homemade pie crust, but if you’d like a shortcut, use store-bought pie crust.  If you make our homemade crust, only make half of it since you’ll just be needing a single crust. I’ve not tried this yet with our oatmeal pie crust, but double the oats is not a bad thing!

How to Make Oatmeal Pie in 3 Steps.

  • Prepare the pie Crust. Again, make your own or use store bought.
  • Make the filling. This is one of the easiest pie fillings you’ll come across. Mix in a large bowl. It takes less than 5 minutes.

  1. Bake. Mix all of the ingredients and pour them into the unbaked pie shell. Bake in a 350ºF oven for 45-50 minutes. The center of the pie should look fully cooked and not seem overly “jiggly”. The pie will come out soft, but not so soft that it can’t be cut into slices.

Serving Suggestion

Allow the oatmeal pie to cool before you slice it. This will help it set so you can get clean slices. As you can see from the picture, there will be just a little bit of syrup that oozes out. And the scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream is a must!

  • Preheat the oven to 350º Fahrenheit.
  • In a large bowl, combine the first 7 ingredients and whisk well.
  • Pour into an unbaked pie shell.
  • Bake for 45-55 minutes or until the pie is cooked through. The center should look set.
  • Serve warm with ice cream.

  • Dark brown sugar is delicious also. 
  • Raisins or chopped nuts are a great addition to the filling.

This recipe was amazing! My family loved 🥰 it. I used dark brown sugar. The recipe was very easy to follow we had it with cream not ice cream next time I will definitely try it with ice cream

I have made this twice in the past two weeks. I made it in one of my cast iron pans this time. I also altered it by adding a cup of golden raisins.
It was absolutely delicious both times.
I also make my own pie crust because it is just so much more homemade.

I just made this but have to go get ice cream and/or whipping cream . I did notice that your narrative said to bake for 45-50 minutes while the recipe said 55-60. I did 55 minutes and it still seemed soupy so I left it a couple more minutes. I don’t think it actually was really soupy at the 55 minute mark, but it had a big rise to it that settled and firmed a bit when I pulled it out.

Delish! It’s hard to tell exactly when it is cooked through. I forgot about it in the oven so it was certainly cooked through when I remembered it. I also added chocolate chips which promptly sank to the bottom. I think the chocolate is what really ,add this pop for me. Loved it!

It is quick, easy and decadent. I’ve made it half a dozen times now. I’ve added coconut. Once I made it with some chocolate chips. But the best was adding half a cup off dried cranberries. Very good. Glad I found this recipe! Thank you.
