Frozen Hot Chocolate Recipe

My kids have a slight addiction to coffee shop drinks.

Somehow we got into the habit of stopping at a coffee shop anytime we are out on a long shopping trip. They come by it honestly, really. I have always made quick passes through the drive thru to get coffee while out fighting the store crowds. It helps me survive. And as the kids have grown older, they cry foul when I am enjoying my coffee shop drink and tell them they don’t get to join in the fun.

I don’t give in to them every time…because…I’m the mom and I can give them the gift of “No”. But when they do get to choose a drink, you can bet it is frozen hot chocolate. Even when it is Ohio-freezing outside.

Lately, we’ve been starting out our shopping trips with drinks in hand. It’s so much cheaper and the chocolatey goodness keeps smiles on their faces as we work our way down the never-ending shopping list.

Last month, we recreated their favorite drink at home and ended up with a double-chocolate delicious frozen hot chocolate recipe that you can make in under 5 minutes. Added bonus? It costs well below the $3-$5 coffee shop drink prices. Win all around!

Maddie, Braden and Kinslee were the taste testers for this since they are the frozen hot chocolate pros. They suggested some tweaks to my original recipe that gave it just a little extra creaminess and a double chocolate boost.

And although this was the only time I had ever tried frozen hot chocolate, I’d have to say that I now know what their fuss is all about. It’s sweet. Cool. Creamy.

Give your kids a treat with this fun take on a hot drink!

This is the high powered blender we use to make this drink. We use it on a daily basis and love it!

Instructions

  • Mix the two hot chocolate packets into the warmed milk.*
  • Pour the chocolate milk, white milk, half & half, chocolate syrup and chopped ice into a blender.

  • Top with whipped cream and chocolate syrup.
  • Serve immediately.

Notes

*I often do this step ahead of time, then place the chocolate milk into the refrigerator to cool. This helps keep the frozen hot chocolate as cold as possible. If you do this step, stir the chocolate milk before you add it to the blender because some chocolate will settle at the bottom of the cup.

Would this work useing non fat or light milk and lighter cream? I would also like to use Cacao powder and Stevia.. Hot Choc has a lot of sugar in it. So I would tweek it where I could. Thx.

So glad to have found this one. I love having a special treat for my non-coffee loving husband. I’ve also made it for my dairy free son using almond milk and he loves it!!

I usually only drink the frozen ones with the coffee added so could tell me about how much or how would i add coffee or espresso to this drink and still have it blend in. I’m a real chocoholic and i want to make this really bad..

Super yummy! I thought the chocolate mix would be too much in proportion to the liquid called for, but it was just right. Thanks! This one’s a keeper!
