Welcome to my latest lunch obsession. Golden fried, skillet pizza potatoes topped with pizza sauce, mozzarella cheese, pepperoni, Italian sausage and peppers. When you’re craving pizza flavors but don’t want the crust, home fried potatoes with pizza toppings is the answer.

I often share with you my love for all things pizza. Pizza babka.  Crustless pizza dip…and don’t forget the calzones! I took a class at the Pizza Culinary Academy in Chicago to bring you tips for the best homemade pizza, then built an outdoor wood fired pizza oven to practice our pizza skills at home.

A few years ago I took my favorite parts of pizza, golden browned cheese and lightly crispy pepperoni, and paired them with skillet fried potatoes. It was one of the best combinations I’ve had (oh hey, baked pizza potatoes). Pizza Potatoes are perfect the perfect, gluten free solution to satisfying that pizza craving.

This is a great alternative to traditional pizza night and pizza dough. Kids love it because they can choose what combinations of toppings they put on their potatoes.  Banana peppers, olives, hot peppers…each of their skillet pizzas have their own little touch.

Ingredients

ingredients for pizza potatoes on a table
  • What potatoes are best for frying? Red potatoes are waxy, low starch potato that hold their shape well when frying. Russets will work, but they’ll fall apart and end up like pizza mashed potatoes. Which may not be a bad thing, right?!
  • Oil. Choose your favorite oil for frying. I use olive oil or coconut oi.
  • Pizza sauce. Homemade pizza sauce is easy and has such a simple, lightly sweet flavor. Simple tomato sauce works in a pinch.
  • Garlic salt. Garlic salt gives the potatoes a great flavor base for the pizza skillet. Don’t have garlic salt? Substitute with ¼ teaspoon garlic powder plus ¼ teaspoon salt.
  • Toppings. Choose any type of cheese and toppings that you like on pizza.

Make Pizza Potatoes in 4 Steps

  • Use a sharp knife to cut the potatoes into 1/2″ cubes.
  • Drizzle oil in a large skillet (cast iron works great!) and heat over medium heat. Add the potatoes and cook until they are tender, turning them several times during cooking. Sprinkle with garlic salt during cooking.
  • Once the potatoes are tender, top the potatoes with sauce, cheese and your favorite pizza toppings, such as peppers, fresh tomatoes, onions, mushrooms and sausage. If the skillet you are using isn’t oven safe, transfer the potatoes to a baking sheet or baking pan.
  • Broil for 3-5 minutes, watching closely. The cheese should start to bubble and brown. Finish with Italian seasoning or fresh rosemary, fresh basil or oregano make a beautiful display.
