I am always on the lookout for new snack ideas. Particularly something that will please all four kiddos (and mom). Sometimes apples and peanut butter again just won’t cut it. I had been keeping a package of dates in the pantry to try out orange walnut stuffed dates. Orange, honey and walnuts happened to be what I had on hand, so in they went. Sometimes the best recipes happen that way!

Usually when I make dates they are ground up in some way, so the children were a bit skeptical of the full date. After I denied requests of eating just the cream cheese, they inhaled the rest. I’d say it is a keeper 🙂

I was a little late to the date trend when it started a few years ago, but I think it is safe to say they are here to stay. Did you know they are full of potassium and fiber? So naturally sweet, it’s easy to find them dried without added sugar. I’m very picky that my dried fruit contain only fruit. Since the natural sugars are a preservative it’s easy to find dried dates with dates as the only ingredient.

The orange cream cheese filling only takes minutes to whip together. These little treats are sweet, but all of the sweetener is from fruit and honey. I used raw unprocessed honey (Madhava Brand), which has a rather strong flavor but works so well with the orange. Cutting the dates can be a sticky challenge, but fortunately buying pitted dates saves some of the work. I am thinking in a real rush, you could just dip the dates into the filling.

The filling will look like it’s not enough, but remember there is only ½ to 1 teaspoon that fits inside each date. I couldn’t believe that I was able to fill 30 dates. The yield will certainly depend on the size of the dates, and how stuffed you like them. I would recommend putting the stuffing into a ziploc bag or even a piping bag, as it makes it so much easier to get the filling into the small opening.

The stuffed dates can be made ahead and stored in the refrigerator. Not only are these great as an afternoon snack, I think they would be a perfect party appetizer!

We loved these, altered somewhat with half each goat and cream cheese, and 2 teaspoons of honey. I’ll try one teaspoon next time, the dates are so deliciously sweet on their own. We will definitely make these again.
