Key Ingredients for Hamburger Gravy:

  • Ground beef: For a different flavor, add in Italian sausage, ground chicken, or ground turkey instead.
  • Salt and pepper
  • Onion
  • Garlic powder
  • Dried thyme
  • Half and half: The half and half can be substituted with whole or 2% milk, a combination of heavy whipping cream and milk, or evaporated milk.
  • Cream of mushroom soup: Cream of chicken soup can be used instead of cream of mushroom.

How to Make Hamburger Gravy

  • Brown the meat. In a medium-large skillet over medium-high heat, add cooking oil. Once the oil has heated, add in ground beef and chopped onion. Cook and crumble until the meat is no longer pink and the onion is translucent, about 5-7 minutes. Drain off any grease.
  • Add seasonings. Add the garlic powder, salt, pepper, and dried thyme and stir to combine and cook for 30 seconds.
  • Make the gravy. Pour the half and half and cream of mushroom soup into to the cooked meat mixture and cook for an additional 2 minutes or until heated through. Make sure to not bring this to a boil or the half and half might curdle.
  • Serve right away. Serve on top of mashed potatoes or noodles and garnish with parsley, optional. Best when served warm.

How do I store my gravy?

Cover and store in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. You can also freeze your hamburger gravy in an airtight container for 2 to 4 months.

Recipe Variations:

  • Instead of thyme, you can add rosemary, oregano, tarragon, chives, cilantro or any other herbs or seasonings you like.
  • There are many vegetables you can add to this dish. Try frying up some mushrooms with the onions, add half a bag of frozen peas or mixed vegetables, or drain and add a can of green beans before serving.
  • If you want a totally different dish, change out the protein, make it with coconut milk and curry powder, add some cauliflower or chickpeas, and serve it over rice or with naan bread.

What else can I make with this gravy?

  • Hamburger gravy can be served over toast, rice, biscuits, polenta, pasta (such as egg noodles), mashed potatoes, zucchini noodles, spaghetti squash, or anything else that sounds good!
  • You can even make it into a hamburger pot pie by adding some veggies, putting a pie crust on top, and baking. It’s a very versatile and quick dish.
