Parmesan Butter Breadsticks

We love some buttery bread. Have you noticed that most of our bread recipes have “butter” in the title? Check out buttery biscuits, buttery dips…and don’t forget buttery rolls! Those are all some amazing breads.

These Parmesan Butter Breadsticks were one of those recipes that my mom waited to long to pull out of her recipe box. My mom wanted to try them one weekday afternoon for dinner, and I was more than happy to bake something good again.

Breadsticks and Parmesan butter. What could go wrong?

Copycat Olive Garden Breadsticks

My first bite reminded me of Olive Garden. That’s always a good sign! Their breadsticks are amazing. I always eat too many and get stuffed before my meal even comes. These breadsticks aren’t meant to be exactly a copycat version of those popular breadsticks, but the texture is the same. Soft, warm, and chewy.

These soft, buttery breadsticks will complete your Italian dinner!

Don’t get discouraged that this recipe takes a little time.  You have to mix the dough, let it rise, shape the breadsticks, let them rise again.  I honestly would rather something much quicker. But, when the result is as good as a warm, buttery breadstick?  I can make an exception.

The Parmesan butter is really easy to make. All it is is Parmesan, butter, and a little garlic powder.  When the butter soaks in, it makes the breadstick seem even softer.

Am I making you hungry yet?

Parmesan Butter Breadsticks

This recipe makes about 3 dozen 8″ breadsticks.  That’s a lot, but trust me, they don’t last long! They’re the perfect pairing with a pile of spaghetti and meatballs.

Ingredients

  • 2 packages active dry yeast ¼ oz each
  • 1/2 cup sugar divided
  • 2 cups warm water divided
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 1/2-5 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup butter softened
  • 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder

Instructions

  • In a stand mixer bowl, dissolve yeast and 1 tablespoon sugar in a 1 cup warm water. Add the oil, egg, salt, 2 cups of flour and remaining sugar and water. Beat on medium speed with paddle attachment until smooth. Stir in remaining flour, enough to form a soft dough. Using the dough hook attachment, knead the bread on medium speed for 6-7 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let the dough rise in a warm place until doubled, which will take about 30-40 minutes. Punch the dough down. Turn it onto a floured surface and divide the dough into about 36 pieces. Shape each piece into a 6-8 inch rope. Place them onto greased baking sheets. Cover and let it rise until doubled, about 25 minutes. Bake at 400 degrees for 10-12 minutes, or until golden brown.
  • In a small bowl, combine the butter, Parmesan cheese and garlic powder. Brush on the warm breadsticks, or serve it along side the breadsticks.

Notes

If the dough is still sticky after adding 5 cups of flour, keep adding flour, a ¼ a cup at a time, until it forms a soft dough.

I’ve made these twice. And twice my family couldn’t eat the rest of their dinner because they ate so many of these, LOL! We absolutely love them – thank you so much for posting this recipe. I changed nothing from the original 🙂

Yes, I’m hungry and you are totally speaking my language! 🙂 There has never been a breadstick or bread of any kind that I haven’t loved and these look just awesome! I suspect hubby and I would be battling over the last one. Pinning and sharing – have a happy weekend!

I tried these the other day and found they were really sweet – would probably taste good with brown sugar and cinnamon butter. Made them again today with 1/2 the sugar and liked them much more!
