The best 3 ingredient sausage balls, served with chipotle honey mustard dipping sauce. They are a family favorite and make an easy meatball appetizer.

Bisquick sausage balls are a favorite during the holidays as a Christmas appetizer, but also for game day. Using freshly shredded cheese and a quality breakfast sausage give the meatballs the perfect texture. Serve alongside other popular appetizers like lil’ smokies, pickle rollups, crab rangoon dip and spinach artichoke dip.

Serve Sausage Balls With This Easy Homemade Dip

I’m always looking for crowd-pleaser appetizer recipes during the holidays, and nothing is more welcomed than a tray of our favorite sausage balls and a sweet & spicy dip!

Sausage balls are a midwestern favorite, and although they are super easy, I needed to share since they are a family favorite.

Using Bisquick keeps the ingredient list down and makes them quick, but if you prefer, see our instructions for using a flour mixture or make our homemade Bisquick. Gluten-free Bisquick works as well.

For extra flavor, I serve the sausage balls with a honey mustard dip flavored with adobo sauce. It’s a little sweet and tangy with a hint of spice. Sauces like mustard bbq sauce, cheese sauce and homemade bbq sauce are great, too.

If you love these, try our cheese biscuits and turkey sausage, too. And try our Bisquick cookies and Bisquick cinnamon rolls.

Enjoy! -Julie

Ingredients

bisquick, cheese and sausage on a table

Use your favorite savory sausage. I chose Bob Evans, but I also buy Jimmy Dean often. Lean sausage like turkey sausage doesn’t work the best in this recipe and can lead to the sausage balls being dry.

I buy a block of cheese and grate it at home rather than buying pre-shredded cheese. Grating your own cheese will help prevent the sausage balls from being dry. Use pepper jack cheese for extra spice!

The sausage calls for adobo sauce, which is the sauce in a can of chipotle peppers. Use the leftovers in our chipotle chicken pasta or vegetarian burritos.

Notes

In place of Bisquick, use 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, 1 tablespoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon salt, 2 tablespoons cold butter and 1-2 tablespoons milk, as needed.
