Ham pickle roll ups make the easiest appetizer! These pickle pinwheels are low carb and high in protein. They make a satisfying snack and your guests will love them.

Honey ham, cream cheese and baby dill pickles are a unique combination, but when you need a quick snack or party appetizer, they deliver! Serve the pickle roll ups on a platter with other popular appetizers like lil smokies, creamy dill dip and a cheese ball.

Forget Charcuterie: These Pickle Roll Ups Are Stealing the Show

When the holidays roll around, I always get cookie and appetizer requests from the kids. They all have their favorites they ask for, like buckeyes, pimento cheese dip and buffalo chicken dip, but all three ask for ham pickle roll ups!

I didn’t grow up eating pickle rollups, but Matt did, so when I started attending his family holiday gatherings, the little roll ups, sometimes called “Minnesota Sushi” were always there. And my kids loved them from the start.

This “recipe” hardly needs a written article, but since they are a holiday family favorite, I had to share! Simply roll and slice. They make such a perfect appetizer and look pretty on a serving tray.

Ingredients

There are three simple ingredients:

  • Dill Pickles. Some use sweet pickles, but it’s all about the dill in our house. Instead of spears, I use baby dills.
  • Cream Cheese. A block of cream cheese at room temperature will spread easily.
  • Sliced Ham. I use a thin ham slices, but other popular sliced meat options are pastrami, salami or roast beef.

Ingredients
 

  • 15 baby dill pickles
  • 8 ounces cream cheese
  • 16 ounces thin sliced honey ham I bought Aldi brand

Instructions
 

  • Remove the baby dill pickles from the jar and place them on paper towels to dry them. The cream cheese should be softened to a little warmer than room temperature. It should be soft enough to spread easily.
  • The ham I used was not wet at all, but if yours is, pat it with a paper towel to dry it. The rollups will stay crisp if the pickles are dry (with a matte appearance) and the ham is dry.
  • Lay out 2-3 pieces of thin sliced ham. Spread cream cheese over the ham slices. Place two dried pickles at one end, and roll up the ham so the pickle is inside. Continue with the remaining ham slices.
  • Once all of the rolls are made, use a sharp knife to slice the ham roll ups. I get 4-5 slices out of each roll up. The ends may not stay together well, but those are the scraps I let the kids snack on!
  • Place the rollups in an airtight container and store in the fridge until serving.

Notes

  • If you have thicker, larger ham slices, you may only need one.
  • For more flavor, mix in 1 tablespoon of dry ranch seasoning to the cream cheese.
  • If you’re having a hard time cutting slices, refrigerate the rollups for 20 minutes or so to firm up the cream cheese.

How to Make Pickle Roll Ups

The recipe is super easy, but here’s a few visuals so you can see what’s happening.

My slices of deli ham were small, so the baby dills are the same length, which is perfect for rolling.

If your cream cheese isn’t spreading well, either the ham is too wet, or the cream cheese is too hard.

Once the cream cheese is spread, roll them up and slice.

To make the pickle roll ups in advance, wrap them in plastic wrap and refrigerate before slicing. Make them up to 1 day in advance.

They make an easy appetizer, but your fingers may end up a little messy! When your kids request them, though, it’s 100% worth it.
