The Simple Salmon Recipe That Tastes Like a Restaurant Dinner

A honey garlic sauce is one of my favorite marinades for chicken. Honey garlic chicken wings, honey sesame chicken, honey oregano pork chops and honey sriracha chicken wings are in regular rotation in my house.

This honey garlic salmon recipe, though? It just hits different because the marinade makes the best salmon that melts in your mouth. Pan-searing can make the salmon filet brown quickly, but the sauce creates a little bit of a crisp texture that is irresistible.

Salmon is high in protein, making it a great option as a main dish when served with vegetables such as asparagus, broccoli or green beans.

This glazed salmon is also good in tacos, or with pasta. Cut it into bite-size pieces for a honey garlic salmon bowl, delicious with jasmine rice.

Honey Garlic Salmon Ingredients

honey garlic salmon ingredients on a table

I buy a large salmon fillet and cut it into strips. This is more economical, plus, the pieces tend to be more similar in size, which makes them cook evenly.

If the salmon is frozen, allow it to thaw and pat it dry with a paper towel.

To make this honey glazed salmon recipe gluten free, use coconut aminos in place of the soy sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ pounds fresh salmon fillets
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ¼ cup honey
  • 1/4 cup reduced sodium soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil divided
  • 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
  • 2 teaspoons minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon fresh ginger paste

Instructions

  • Dry salmon on all sides with paper towels. Season with salt and pepper. Set to the side. 1 ½ pounds fresh salmon fillets, ½ teaspoon salt, ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • In a large bowl, whisk together the honey, soy sauce, 1 tablespoon olive oil, lemon juice, garlic and ginger. Whisk well. Add the salmon and turn gently to coat the salmon with sauce. Let rest for 10-15 minutes before cooking. ¼ cup honey, ¼ cup reduced sodium soy sauce, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice, 2 teaspoons minced garlic, 1 teaspoon fresh ginger paste
  • Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat on the stovetop with the remaining tablespoon of oil. (You can also cook on a grill preheated to 400ºF.) Take each piece of salmon out of the marinade and place skin side down in the skillet. Cook for 4 minutes, then using a fish spatula, gently flip and cook for 2-3 minutes on the other side. The salmon is done when it reaches 145ºF. It should flake easily with a fork.
  • To make the glaze, pour the remaining marinade in a small saucepan and simmer over low heat until it has reduced and is slightly thickened. This will take 5-8 minutes. Drizzle the glaze over the salmon.Do not use the marinade for topping the salmon unless you’ve cooked it so that it is safe to eat.
  • Garnish with sliced green onions and sesame seeds for finishing touches. Serve with rice and veggies. Spoon the reduced sauce over the top.

Notes

Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in an air fryer or on a skillet on the stovetop.

How long can you marinate salmon?

This honey garlic salmon can be marinated anywhere from 15 minutes up to 2 hours.

Do I cook salmon with the skin on?

For pan-searing salmon, I leave the skin on and cook with the skin-side down first. This will help the salmon hold together. If I bake salmon in the oven, I often remove the skin first.

What internal temperature should salmon be cooked to?

Honey garlic salmon should be cooked to an internal temperature of 145ºF.
