I love pie. Fruit pies, pudding pies, custard pies, key lime pies…just about any pie there is. My favorite Amish Cooking is loaded with varieties of pies I had never even heard of. It’s been fun to work through making them. This oatmeal pie quickly became my kids favorite. It’s the ultimate in comfort food.

What is oatmeal pie?

Have you ever heard of Amish Oatmeal Pie?  Evidently during the Civil War, pecans were in short supply in the South, making them very expensive. People would substitute oats for the pecans, resulting in this delicious oatmeal pie that tastes similar to a pecan pie. This recipe, however, doesn’t come from a Southern cookbook, but from my Amish cookbook. I’m sure both know how to make a good pie!

What does oatmeal pie taste like?

This sweet pie bakes up soft and gooey. Every bite brought a different food to mind. A bowl of oatmeal with brown sugar. A cinnamon rollOatmeal CookiesBaked oatmeal. Oatmeal is one of those versatile ingredients that is in so many comfort foods of ours. And this pie is one of my new favorites.

How to Make Oatmeal Pie

  • Pie Crust. You’ll start with an unbaked pie shell. You’ll find our favorite recipe here, but if you’d like a shortcut, use store-bought pie dough.  If you make our recipe, only make half of it since you’ll just be needing a single crust.
  • Filling. This is one of the easiest pie fillings you’ll come across: 3 eggs, 2 tablespoons softened butter, 2/3 cup Quaker Oats old-fashioned rolled oats, 2/3 cup milk, 1 teaspoon vanilla, 2/3 cup white sugar, and 1 cup of brown sugar. The brown sugar is what gives this pie an unbelievable taste.
  • Bake. Mix all of the ingredients and pour them into the unbaked pie shell. Bake in a 350-degree oven for 45-50 minutes. The center of the pie should look fully cooked and not seem overly “jiggly”. The pie will come out soft, but not so soft that it can’t be cut into slices.

It’s best if you allow the pie to cool before you slice it. This will help it set so you can get clean slices. As you can see from the picture, there will be just a little bit of syrup that oozes out…perfect for spooning over a scoop of ice cream. And the ice cream is a must!

  • 3 large eggs room temperature
  • 2/3 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 2 tablespoons salted butter softened
  • 2/3 cup old fashioned rolled oats
  • 2/3 cup half and half (or whole milk)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 9" unbaked pie shell
  • Ice cream optional


  • Preheat the oven to 350º Fahrenheit.
  • In a medium bowl, combine the first 7 ingredients and mix well.
  • Pour into an unbaked pie shell.
  • Bake for 45-55 minutes or until the pie is cooked through. The center should look set.
  • Serve warm with ice cream.

This pie was ridiculous!! I made it for Thanksgiving Dinner yesterday and basically sucked down half of it before everybody else was done with their dinner…. Reminded us of my wife’s Grammy’s baked oatmeal from years ago. One of the best pies I’ve ever eaten–it will be a frequent return visitor.
