Never run out of pumpkin spice again! An easy homemade pumpkin pie spice that is perfect in pies, breads, cinnamon rolls.

It’s pumpkin season and the time of year when I need pumpkin spice mix ready 24/7! Although pumpkin pie spice is fairly cheap to buy and easy to find in the store, I like to make our own so we have consistent flavor in every baked good.

You most likely have the ingredients for this homemade pumpkin pie spice mix in your cupboards. Have the spices ready and mix this in no time at all!

Why you’ll love this recipe:

  • The perfect flavor as we make it…
  • …but completely customizable to you!
  • Makes about ½ cup of spice mix.
  • Add not just to pumpkin pie, but also to your favorite breads, muffins, and cakes.

What is in pumpkin pie spice?

Our favorite pumpkin pie spice has just 4 ingredients:

  • cinnamon
  • nutmeg
  • ginger
  • allspice. Allspice is NOT the same as pumpkin pie spice. Allspice is a spice all on its own.

Use the ground version of all these spices so your homemade mix is smooth. Some versions of pumpkin pie spice will include cloves, but we find that allspice gives it a deeper, more peppery flavor.

You can tweak this recipe to be however you like it. Maybe add a dash of cloves or a bit less allspice. It’s all up to you!

How much pumpkin pie spice should you use?

This depends on the recipe, quantity and personal taste of what you are making. For a pie or a loaf of bread, we’d add about 2 teaspoons of spice mix. And many times, we add an extra teaspoon of cinnamon, just because we love cinnamon flavor.

If a recipe calls for individual spices instead of pumpkin pie spice mix, we normally add up the amount of individual spices and then add another ¼ to ½ teaspoon and add that much spice mix.

How to Store Pumpkin Spice

Store this mix in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. It’s best to use spice blends within a month since they can lose some potency over time.

Can I add pumpkin pie spice to coffee?

Yes, you can, but know that the spices will not totally melt into the coffee. The spices may float on the top or sink to the bottom, but if you can handle that, your coffee will taste good!
